The Complete Sakura Guide

Sakura is Japan's most romantic seasonal spectacle. But the bloom is brief and varies by region — catching full bloom takes a little planning.

1. Reading the Bloom Forecast

Sakura blooms from south to north. Kyushu and Kansai peak late March to early April, Tokyo in early April, while Tohoku and Hokkaido wait until late April or early May. Check the official 'sakura front' forecast two weeks before departure for the best accuracy.

2. Best Viewing Spots

Tokyo

The Meguro River's blossom tunnel, lively hanami at Ueno Park, and the elegant gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen each have their charm. Evening illuminations are especially romantic.

Kyoto

Stroll the Philosopher's Path, look out over a sea of blossoms from Kiyomizu-dera, or catch mountain sakura reflected at Arashiyama. The old capital's blossoms carry a special grace.

3. What to Wear

Mornings and evenings stay cool (around 8–15°C). Layer up: a light long-sleeve base with a trench or thin down jacket. For photos, light tones complement the pink blossoms beautifully.

4. Hanami Etiquette

Hanami is a cherished Japanese tradition. Don't shake trees or pick branches; always take your rubbish home after a picnic; and in crowded parks, a little courtesy and quiet go a long way.
