The floating mountains of Avatar were inspired by Zhangjiajie. Seeing them in person is even more breathtaking than on screen.
1. Wulingyuan Scenic Area
A UNESCO World Heritage site of over 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars. Ride the Bailong Elevator to the summit and gaze over the 'Avatar Hallelujah Mountain' as seas of cloud roll past.
2. Tianmen Mountain & Glass Walkway
Ride the world's longest mountain cableway up Tianmen, brave the glass walkway suspended a thousand metres up, then visit the cave-pierced 'Heaven's Gate'. A must for the brave — and worth it for everyone.
3. Fenghuang Ancient Town
The Tuo River winds through stilt houses mirrored in the water, glowing with lights at night. Stay overnight to feel the Miao town at dusk and dawn.
4. Planning Tips
Best months are April–June and September–November, with pleasant weather and frequent cloud seas. Expect plenty of walking — wear non-slip shoes; shoe covers are required on the glass walkway. Allow 5–6 days for a relaxed pace.
